When Should Training Begin?

Starting training early in puppies and kittens helps prevent behavior problems and makes socialization much easier. However, their developmental stages differ.

**Puppy Training 🐶**

Critical period:

- Between 3–16 weeks is the “socialization period.” - During this time, puppies explore their environment and get used to new sounds and sights. - Basic training, toilet habits, and socialization should begin in this stage.

Training to start:

--From 8 weeks onward:

- Toilet training - Basic commands (“sit,” “come,” “no”) - Responding to their name

--After 12 weeks:

- Socialization with the outside world (if vaccinations are complete) - Controlled introductions with other dogs and people - Simple leash training

Tip: Keep training sessions short, positive, and reward-based. This method is the most effective for puppies. ✅

**Kitten Training 🐱**

Critical period:

- Between 2–12 weeks is the socialization period. - In this stage, kittens get used to people, other cats, and the home environment.

Training to start:

- Litter training: Usually learned from the mother cat at around 3–4 weeks. - Scratching habits: Introduce a scratching post around 5–6 weeks. - Play and socialization: From 8–12 weeks, introduce new people, toys, and sounds.

Tip: With kittens, avoid punishment and focus on redirection. Provide alternatives (scratching posts, toys) for unwanted behaviors. ✅

General Advice 🎯

- Starting training early helps prevent future behavior issues. - Sessions should be short (5–10 minutes) and enjoyable. - Positive reinforcement (rewards and affection) is the most effective method.

Remember: Early training makes life easier for both you and your furry friend. 💚
