Coronavirus in Cats
Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is a common RNA virus that affects only cats and cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs. While it usually causes mild symptoms, in some cases it can develop into a serious and fatal disease known as FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). FCoV has two main forms:
🔹 1. FECV (Feline Enteric Coronavirus)
• Affects the intestines • Usually mild or asymptomatic • Most common form • Spreads through fecal contact
🔹 2. FIPV (Feline Infectious Peritonitis Virus)
• A mutated form of FECV • Can develop in cats with weakened immune systems • Causes FIP disease • Can be fatal
🦠 FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis)
Around 5% of cats carrying FCoV may develop FIP, which occurs in two different forms:
1. “Wet” Form (Effusive)
Characterized by fluid accumulation in the abdomen or chest.
Symptoms:
◦ Abdominal swelling ◦ Breathing difficulties ◦ Lethargy ◦ Fever ◦ Weight loss
2. “Dry” Form (Non-Effusive)
May affect internal organs or the nervous system.
Symptoms:
◦ Eye problems ◦ Neurological signs (balance issues, tremors) ◦ Weakness ◦ Fever ◦ Anemia
🧪 Diagnostic Methods
• Blood tests (e.g. high globulin, low albumin/globulin ratio, anemia) • PCR tests (especially for detecting FIPV) • X-ray or ultrasound (to identify fluid buildup) • Cytology (microscopic analysis of abdominal or chest fluid)
🔍 While a definitive diagnosis is often made through autopsy, advanced testing methods now allow for high-accuracy diagnosis during the cat’s life.
💉 Vaccination Status
• There is no effective vaccine included in routine vaccination schedules for FCoV. • Some vaccines have been developed for FIP, but their effectiveness is limited and they are generally not recommended.
✅ Prevention Tips
• Maintain hygiene in crowded environments (shelters, catteries, etc.) • Keep litter boxes clean and sanitized • Quarantine new cats before introducing them to others • Reduce stress (which may lower mutation risk)
