Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?

It is quite common for dogs to eat grass outdoors, and it is not always considered “abnormal.” However, there may be different reasons behind this behavior:

Possible Reasons

1. Natural instinct • Their wild ancestors occasionally ate plants to get fiber. • It may help regulate the digestive system.

2. Digestive problems • Some dogs eat grass and then vomit when they have mild stomach discomfort, gastritis, or nausea. • However, vomiting after eating grass does not always mean illness.

3. Fiber deficiency • If the diet is low in fiber, dogs may try to balance it by eating grass.

4. Boredom or play • Especially in young and energetic dogs, chewing grass can simply be a way to pass the time.

5. Vitamin-mineral imbalance • Though rare, nutritional deficiencies can trigger this behavior.

Things to Watch Out For

- Grass contaminated with pesticides, insecticides, or fertilizers can be very dangerous. - Sharp-leaved plants may irritate the mouth, throat, or intestines. - If grass-eating suddenly increases, or if vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite are also present, a veterinary check-up is necessary.

Remember: Eating grass is often a normal behavior, but sudden changes or additional health problems always require veterinary attention. 💚
