Dog Walking Guidelines

Walking your dog is more than just a stroll; it’s an essential routine that supports physical exercise, bathroom needs, socialization, and training. When not done correctly, it can create safety issues for both your dog and the environment.

1. Leash Use and Control 👍🏻

- Dogs must be walked on a leash in urban areas according to Animal Protection Law No. 5199 - A leash length of about 1–1.5 meters is ideal - Retractable leashes can be risky in crowded places; fixed leashes are recommended

2. Muzzle Requirements for Certain Breeds ⚠️

- In Türkiye, breeds classified as “dangerous” must be walked with a muzzle and a short leash

3. Responsibility to Pick Up Waste 🧼

- Picking up your dog’s waste is both a legal and moral responsibility - Always carry waste bags during walks

4. Walk Duration and Frequency 🕒

- Adult dogs should be walked 2–3 times a day for a total of 45–90 minutes - Puppies and senior dogs may require shorter walk durations - Walks are important not only for bathroom needs but also for mental stimulation

5. Behavior Rules 🧍

- Do not allow your dog to jump on people - Avoid uncontrolled interactions with other animals - Use a short leash in crowded areas - If your dog shows aggression, calmly remove them from the situation - Communicate with other dog owners before entering play areas

6. Choosing the Right Walking Area 🌳

- Sidewalks, green spaces, and dog parks are ideal - Check asphalt temperature in hot weather to prevent paw burns - Avoid areas with heavy traffic, noise, and large crowds

7. Preparing for the Walk 🦮

- Make sure your dog’s collar tag and microchip information are up to date - Bring a water bowl and waste bags - Walk early in the morning or evening during summer, and midday in winter

8. Trained Walking Habits 🐕‍🦺

- Your dog should learn to walk on your left side at your pace - Teach basic commands like “stop,” “slow,” and “leave it” - The leash should not remain constantly tight

9. After-Walk Care 🧡

- Check and clean your dog’s paws - If you notice fatigue, limping, or sensitivity, consult a veterinarian - Provide fresh water and allow time to rest

Remember: Safe, consistent, and enjoyable walks support both the physical and mental wellbeing of your furry friend and strengthen the bond you share. 💚
