Toxic Foods for Cats and Dogs
Some foods can be extremely dangerous for our pets. While certain toxins show their effects immediately, others can cause long-term damage to the kidneys, liver, nervous system, or digestive system.
Below is a list of the most common foods considered toxic by veterinarians;
Chocolate and Cocoa ๐ซ
- Contain theobromine and caffeine, both highly toxic to pets. - Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, rapid heartbeat, seizures. - Dark chocolate is the most dangerous due to higher theobromine content.
Onions, Garlic, Leeks, Chives ๐ง
- Damage red blood cells and can cause anemia. - Symptoms: Weakness, dark urine, difficulty breathing, yellow gums. - Toxic whether cooked or raw.
Grapes and Raisins ๐
- Can cause acute kidney failure in dogs (and sometimes cats). - Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, inability to urinate.
Avocado ๐ฅ
- Contains persin, which can be harmful especially for dogs. - Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, occasional breathing problems.
Caffeinated Drinks โ
- Coffee, tea, energy drinks contain dangerous levels of caffeine. - Symptoms: Restlessness, shaking, rapid heart rate, seizures.
Alcohol and Raw Dough ๐
- Yeast dough produces alcohol and gas as it expands, leading to serious toxicity and bloating. - Symptoms: Vomiting, lack of coordination, slowed breathing, coma.
Artificial Sweeteners (Xylitol) ๐ฌ
- Found in sugar-free gum, diet products, and some candies. - Causes severe hypoglycemia and liver failure, especially in dogs. - Symptoms: Sudden weakness, trembling, seizures.
Fruit Pits and Seeds ๐
- Apple, peach, and apricot pits contain cyanide. - Not usually harmful in tiny amounts but dangerous if chewed or swallowed whole.
Salt and Salty Foods ๐ง
- High salt intake affects the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. - Symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures.
