Coronavirus in Dogs

Canine Coronavirus (CCoV) is a contagious viral infection that affects dogs. While it shares its name with the human coronavirus, it is a completely different strain and cannot be transmitted to humans. There are two main types seen in dogs:

🔹 1. Enteric (Intestinal) Canine Coronavirus (CCoV)

• Target organ: Small intestine • Transmission: Oral contact, especially with contaminated feces • Incubation period: 1–4 days

Possible symptoms:

• Diarrhea (often yellow-orange and foul-smelling) • Vomiting • Lethargy • Loss of appetite • Abdominal pain • Mild fever

Most dogs recover within a week, but in puppies, symptoms may be more severe.

👉 Important note:

If a dog is also infected with Parvovirus (co-infection), the illness can become much more serious and potentially life-threatening.

🔹 2. Respiratory Canine Coronavirus (CRCoV)

• Target organ: Upper respiratory tract • May be part of the kennel cough complex

Possible symptoms:

• Dry cough • Nasal discharge • Mild fever • General fatigue or lethargy

💉 Vaccination & Prevention

• Vaccines are available for enteric CCoV. • While not mandatory, vaccination is recommended for dogs in high-risk environments like shelters, farms, or pet shops.

Prevention tips:

• Maintain good hygiene, especially with feces • Limit contact in crowded environments • Keep puppies away from infected dogs • Follow a consistent vaccination schedule
